The Yowah Opal Festival Designer Jewellery Competition was commenced
in 1997 to begin to promote Yowah Opal. Opal the Queen of
gems is Australia's National Gemstone and Yowah is known for its beautiful and unique opal
nuts - ironstone concretions which hold opal deposits in their centres. Its
popularity and value has spread world wide. Like all opal, no two pieces are
identical. Pipe, crystal, Opalised wood and boulder opal can also be found.
The Yowah Opal Field is a small field in the southern part of the boulder
opal producing region in Queensland, Australia. It is approximatly 1050 kilometres
west of Brisbane, capital of Queensland. The first mining commenced at Yowah in the
1880's.
It was the 1960's before any real development of the field began and it
has continued to grow. Today visitors are welcome to come and visit and to fossick
etc. as well as take part in the community activities and events. The Yowah Opal
Jewellery Competition is part of the programme for the weekend.
