Description: Yowah Opal Fossicking Area. This seems to be a very
popular spot for people fossicking for opal. The opal level is near the surface in
this area and hand picks are used to break up the dirt down to about 2 feet. The
ironstone pieces are then picked out and washed. Sometimes
"crackings" from the old miners can be found. They
only had a market for crystal opal, and the matrix and poorer quality opal was thrown
away. Fossickers find some truly beautiful and valuable pieces.
